Lactation Counselors

Expert Guidance for Breastfeeding Success

Julie Brasel, CNM, is also a Certified Lactation Counselor.

What Is a Lactation Counselor?

A lactation counselor is a certified health professional who specializes in breastfeeding support. Whether you're expecting, have just given birth, or are months into your breastfeeding journey, they’re trained to assist with common concerns like:

  • Nipple pain
  • Latching difficulties
  • Low milk supply
  • Feeding positions
  • Pumping and returning to work

Most often, the first few weeks after birth are when support is needed most – when both you and your baby are still learning.

Lactation counselors earn their certification through the Academy of Lactation Policy and Practice (ALPP), which ensures they meet rigorous standards in both education and care.

How Can a Lactation Counselor Help?

Lactation counselors offer expert guidance on topics such as:

  • Finding a comfortable breastfeeding position
  • Helping your baby latch correctly
  • Understanding feeding cues
  • Creating a sustainable feeding schedule
  • Managing milk supply (increasing, maintaining, or reducing)
  • Monitoring baby’s weight gain
  • Using a breast pump or hand expression
  • Transitioning through weaning
  • Practicing skin-to-skin care (kangaroo care)
  • Preparing for a return to work

They also help address issues related to pumping, latching, and milk production – all while supporting your breastfeeding goals.

What to Expect During a Lactation Counseling Visit

During your appointment, your counselor may:

  • Observe a feeding session and provide real-time coaching
  • Suggest positioning tips for better comfort and efficiency
  • Assist with using and fitting your breast pump correctly
  • Address any concerns unique to your body or your baby’s behavior
  • Show you how to track if your baby is getting enough milk (e.g., by diaper count or weight checks)

They’ll always ask for your consent before offering hands-on assistance. If you’re ever uncomfortable, speak up – your comfort and consent are essential parts of the care process.

A Valuable Resource for New Mothers

Lactation counselors are more than technical experts – they’re compassionate partners on your parenting journey. Especially for new moms without nearby support, a counselor can become a vital presence – someone who understands, listens, and empowers.

Midwives and lactation counselors alike offer skilled, nurturing support during a deeply important time in your life.
